What to do in case of an accident at the ZNPP

Today there is a high probability that the Russian military will commit terrorist attack at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, in which the armed forces of Ukraine will eventually be blamed. There is already confirmation that a provocation is being prepared in the temporarily occupied territory. For this reason, we all need to be as careful and prepared as possible.

Edition “With Taste” decided to remind the rules what to do in case of an accident at the ZNPP and how to protect yourself and your family from radiation. An energy specialist spoke about the main methods of protection in such an emergency. Of course, let this instruction never be useful to anyone. But, as the saying goes, “Forewarned is forearmed.”

What to do next in case of a radiation accident
Let’s start with the fact that not a single scenario for the development of events at the Zaporozhye NPP does not require iodine prophylaxis. Uncontrolled use of tincture of iodine, potassium iodide, Lugol’s solution or betadine will cause poisoning and serious burns of the mucosa. Remember the following instructions and follow the established rules.

Stay in cover

The most suitable place is the basement or the middle of the building. Given that radioactive materials are instantly deposited on all external surfaces, try to keep away from roofs and walls. If possible, stay in a room with no windows or outside doors. Close windows and doors, seal all possible openings. Turn off air conditioners. Stay in the shelter until you receive clear instructions from the authorities. Keep your pets close to you and do not let them walk outside.
Follow official sources of information
Listen carefully to all messages from local authorities, rescuers and police. Turn on the background radio or TV Follow the official channels on Telegram or Facebook. It is also important to listen to the recommendations and instructions of the emergency services.
Disinfect yourself and your family
To reduce the amount of radioactive background, it is better to remove the top layer of clothing. When doing so, be careful not to disperse the radioactive material. Then these things need to be placed in a sealed container or plastic bag. Keep them away from children and pets.

Wash if possible
It is recommended to take a shower with the usual household soap and thoroughly cleanse the body. Wash your hair with shampoo several times to eliminate possible radioactive dust as much as possible. At the same time, masks and conditioners should not be used, since they are able to fix part of the radioactive particles on the hair and scalp. Never rub or scratch the skin to prevent radioactive materials from entering open wounds. If it is not possible to take a shower, then simply wash your hands, face and exposed areas of the body under running water. In addition, stock up on wet wipes and packaged toilet paper. Pay special attention to your hands and face, wipe your eyelashes, eyelids and ears.
Actions in the first hours after the accident

As soon as you become aware of the danger of radioactive contamination, immediately put on a gas mask, respirator, cotton-gauze bandage or anti-dust cloth mask for yourself and your children.

Seal your home. Close windows and doors with a thick cloth. Tape off ventilation hatches, vents and cracks in window frames.
Properly pack the products: place them in an airtight container (container) or wrap them in several layers of paper, put them in jars, pans, bags. In extreme cases, put all stocks in the refrigerator.
Inform your neighbors. Especially the disabled and pensioners. Avoid panic.

Safe food

It is necessary to cook and eat only indoors.
Eat those foods that were stored in the refrigerator, closed boxes, basement, cellar or were bought in the distribution network.
Products such as homemade cottage cheese, milk, fruits, vegetables and herbs can only be consumed after permission from the health authorities.
Use water from trusted sources.
Rinse your mouth with baking soda before eating.

Safety and personal hygiene rules

Even after a day, try not to be outside for a long time. If it becomes necessary to leave the premises, wear personal respiratory protection equipment, a raincoat, boots, a hat and gloves. Children and animals are not allowed outside.

Be careful not to get rain on clothes and body.

Upon returning home, wipe your shoes with a wet rag, brush your outer clothing with a damp brush.
In all premises where people live on a permanent basis, carry out daily wet cleaning (using detergents).

Emergency backpack

Put into your backpack or bag, easy to carry, the following things:

documents (passport, documents on education, birth certificates of children, work book, pension certificate, military ID, and so on);
money, credit cards;
duplicate keys from the house, car;
socks, a set of underwear, comfortable pants, a sweater, a shirt, a raincoat, a hat, gloves and a scarf, comfortable and reliable shoes (preferably closed);
first aid kit;
a supply of water and food for at least 3 days – everything that does not take up much space and can be eaten without pre-treatment;
dishes (flask, spoon, bowler hat, metal mug);
lighters, matches, candles, a flashlight and batteries for it;
toothbrush and paste, soap, towel, toilet paper, a couple of packs of disposable dry and wet wipes. Women – means of intimate hygiene. You can also prepare a razor and a manicure set;
family heirlooms and valuables.

Try to help your loved ones in the implementation of all the above instructions. It is recommended to use radiation dosimeterfor extra protection. And how to protect your home from thieves, read the following article.
